I kicked off the project with some idea generation to see what I can come up with for them. I used mind mapping to find a suitable gift for them, but also explore different options. When I had it clearer what I want to create I researched for similar products to see how they tackle common challenges and did a research on possible locations which could be used to during the treasure hunt. I spent time with storytelling, as it had to be a somewhat coherent story and the whole (user) journey had to be carefully planned so we follow the planned timing. An offline brochure was also created to have a physical gift, and to contain the puzzles. A ran a pilot run on it with a friend to see everything can be accessed and runs smoothly.
The user journey in this case was an actual journey between different points of the city. In this case I did not plan for the emotional level during the journey (I expected them to be excited all the way through), but I checked the opportunities what each location could give. Timing had to be planned, as the game included entry to a spa and a restaurant. It also had to be somewhat short, as due winter time, it was quite cold outside.
Whereas it was great that an online platform was guiding us through the story and search, I felt the need of a printed brochure to add a nice touch to it, and to have the feeling of following a physical map.
As parts of the journey and tasks have been set up without visiting the actual space, I had to run through the process, and also asked a friend to join me. Where difficulty arose, I implemented a help option to show some clues that would help to solve the actual step.
The gift was a great success, they both loved it. Creating it was especially hard from a UX perspective, as opinions prior the development could not be asked, as it would have ruined the surprise. Despite the testing, one of the steps was more difficult than expected, but I was there to help them out, but maybe more emphasis on testing should be used if I ever do a gift like this. Also, a user journey including hunger levels would have been beneficial, as the lunch could have come a bit earlier…
